She made her acting debut by playing the character named Nandini Saxena in the 2003 Hindi-language psychological thriller film Inteha. Vidya Malvade co-starred in the film alongside Ashmit Patel and Nauheed Cyrusi and was nominated for a Filmfare Award, Screen Award, and Star Guild Award in the “Best Female Debut” category as well as for Stardust Awards for both “Superstar of Tomorrow- Female” and “Best Breakthrough Performance – Female”.
Vidya gained popularity with her role as Vidya Sharma, a goalie and the captain of the Indian women’s national hockey team, in the 2007 Hindi-language sports film Chak De! India. Her co-stars for the project included Shah Rukh Khan, Sagarika Ghatge, and others.
Alongside Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Minissha Lamba, and Ankita Makwana, she co-starred as Mallika Raina in the 2008 Hindi-language action thriller film Kidnap, a role that got her nominated for the 2009 Stardust Award for “Best Breakthrough Performance – Female”.
She appeared as a contestant on Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, a Hindi-language stunt-based reality television series, in 2008.
