ULM fires football coach Terry Bowden after 2-10 season: How good is the role?
ULM has fired football coach Terry Bowden, the program announced Sunday. Here’s what you need to know:
- Louisiana-Monroe opened the 2023 season with two wins but dropped its next 10 games, including Saturday’s 52-21 loss to Louisiana.
- Bowden, who was hired in December 2020, went 10-26 in his three seasons with the Warhawks.
- He went 4-8 twice in each of his first two seasons at the helm, and 5-19 in the Sun Belt Conference during his tenure.
How good is the job?
This is one of the toughest jobs in FBS. The Warhawks have one winning season since moving up to FBS in 1994, and there isn’t much money — Bowden was the lowest-paid coach in FBS.

The nature of the job makes it difficult to predict but some potential names to watch could include former New Mexico offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent, Florida A&M coach Willie Simmons, Oklahoma State quarterbacks coach Tim Rattay, Nicholls coach Tim Rebowe, former Michigan State offensive coordinator Jay Johnson and former Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk, among others. — Chris Vannini, college football senior writer

What they’re saying
“After a thorough review, we have decided to make a change in the leadership of ULM football,” ULM athletic director John Hartwell said in a statement. “I want to thank coach Terry Bowden for all he has done over the last three years for our football program and our university.”
Hartwell said he has begun a national search for Bowden’s replacement and will conduct a news conference to discuss the change on Monday at Malone Stadium.
