Police find owner of dog inside car full of barbed wire near Lake Macquarie

Police say a dog spotted inside a parked car “full of barbed wire” near Lake Macquarie is well cared for.

Pictures of the disturbing sight near Caves Beach Surf Life Saving Club at about 10am on Thursday were posted to a community Facebook page, horrifying locals.

The German Shepherd stared through the barbed wire and out the window as its picture was taken.

The person who shared the pictures said police and the RSPCA were called immediately, but the car left before authorities arrived.

They asked others in the community to look out for the car and report it.

NSW Police confirmed to news.com.au on Sunday night that they located the owner later that day.

“They have checked the dog and confirmed there were no injuries and that is being well cared for,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

“They have also been assured also the wire has been permanently removed from the car.”

Police could not share further information about the owner’s reasoning for the barbed wire.

Locals were horrified by the pictures shared online.

“That’s the most f***ed up thing I’ve seen,” one of hundreds of comments read.

“This honestly makes me so sick to think people treat animals like this,” said another.

“This is such strange behaviour and very distressing to see. To be done in the middle of the day in a public place where people will clearly see. I really hope police can still contact them and have a word,” added someone else.

Some said if they were in the same situation they would have smashed the car's window to free the dog.

NSW Police had earlier confirmed to news.com.au they were aware of the sighting at Caves Beach and that when police attended, the car had already left.

A spokesman said Tuggerah Lakes Police were making arrangements to speak to the registered owner.

RSPCA NSW said it could not comment on the matter as it was under police investigation.
