A week ago, TLC finally pulled the trigger and canceled 19 Kids and Counting, the Duggar Family’s reality show. I still don’t know why it took so long for TLC to come to their senses and cancel this mess. I still don’t know if TLC really thought the Duggars could come back from the revelations about Josh Duggar molesting five girls. I still don’t know how much TLC shelled out for damage control and crisis management for the Duggars. Perhaps we’ll never know. But in the wake of the shows’ cancelation, Duggar-friendly sources went to People Magazine to discuss how the Duggars still want to be on TV.

When news broke that the Duggars’ hit TLC show 19 Kids and Counting had been officially canceled, no one was more disappointed than the family, a source who has worked closely with them tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

The cancellation came two months after a 2006 police report surfaced revealing that Josh Duggar had been accused at age 14 of molesting five underage girls – including two of his sisters, Jill Dillard and Jessa Seewald. (He apologized and said he had “acted inexcusably” after the report became public.) The source says the evangelical Christian family, who often discussed their religious faith on their TLC show, is “heartbroken that they’ve now lost that platform.”

“The Duggars want to return to TV because they truly believe it was part of God’s plan for them to spread the word about their faith,” the source says.

“I think Jim Bob and Michelle honestly did expect people to just move on from this,” the source adds. “Their thinking is, they put this behind them ages ago, so why wouldn’t the rest of the world?”

Now with their show off the air, the Duggars’ future in television could possibly parallel that of Kate Gosselin, whose show was also canceled in 2011 following her nasty split from ex-husband Jon Gosselin. According to a source, TLC’s occasional Kate Plus 8 specials on could be used as a potential model for future Duggar series.

I don’t think anyone should compare the Duggars with the Gosselins because (and this is painful to say) Kate Gosselin came out of her show’s cancelation looking much better than the Duggars simply because Kate never molested anyone nor did she cover up a molestation. And it was really obvious that Michelle and Jim-Bob were confused why everybody was SO MAD that Josh Duggar molested all of those children – didn’t people realize that God had forgiven Josh? Didn’t they realize that Josh barely touched those girls? Didn’t they realize that Josh mostly molested sleeping children until he escalated his abuse after his parents put up “safeguards”? I mean, come on! Obviously, this was all God’s plan to make martyrs out of the poor, innocent Duggars.
