Chicago PD begins tonight with Sgt Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) telling Antonio (Jon Seda) to get out of the crime scene and tells Adam Rusek (John Patrick Flueger) to put Antonio’s gun and phone inside his car; Voight tells him what the story is but Adam doesn’t want Voight to take the fault for this as they will bury him; in the end Adam agrees to be with Voight 100%, but he doesn’t look so confident when he throws Antonio’s phone in his car and places a gun in the perps hand.
CPD shows up and Adam says he is the one who got into an altercation with the perp who tried to disarm him; he asks them to contact IRT. Voight is furious with Adam but he doesn’t say a word. Hailey (Tracy Spiridakos), Kevin (LaRoyce Hawkins), Kim (Marina Squerciati) and Jay (Jesse Lee Soffer) arrive at the crime scene all shocked that Rusek was involved in an officer death. He tells them all to go back to the district, not wanting any of them involved in the scene. Adam tells IRT what happened, saying he feared for his life and didn’t have a choice but defend himself. He says he wasn’t injured, they want photos a piss and blow and this will be the last he will see of them.
Back at IU, Voight tells Hailey that Rusek is involving with an officer involving death situation as Antonio takes some time off and that is the last thing they are going to discuss as they will never have to explain something they didn’t say nor hear. Kim understands but is worried about Antonio; Voight says he will be but he needs some time. Sgt Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) walks in, telling them about another carjacking that now involved the death of an 18-year-old victim. Voight asks Trudy to ride with him as they are down two today.
On the scene, it is the same as the previous 4 jackings only this time she fought back. Trudy sets up a tarp as Voight wants her hands bagged in case there is DNA under her nails; he sends Kim out to inform the parents. Jay and Hailey are told to check out cameras that were pointing right at the scene; the excuse the storekeeper so she doesn’t have to see the footage. The video shows that they are smart and don’t look up at the camera even once; they took the train all the way down.
Adam realizes he has a great CI from the area they came from named Mark Rollins (Will Janowitz). Voight tells them to dig into it and a uniformed patrol sitting on the train station so another one doesn’t happen. He talks to Adam about IRT wanting him on a short leash, so he will go with Adam to visit his CI. On the ride over, Voight chastises Adam worrying about a camera or witnesses seeing what Antonio did and it is Voight’s job to protect him, not the other way around; screaming that it was his job as he was the one who allowed Antonio to be there. Adam said he did what he had to do, but Voight reminds him that they only buried Al Olinsky 6 months ago.
Adam pushes his way into Mark’s place, who initially refused to help any further. He tells him to calm down but Voight says he will want to work with him because he is the guy who can get his entire file cleared. Mark says he doesn’t know about any carjacking crew; but Adam says he has to give them one thing and then he is done for good, Mark refuses and Voight tells him his case is still open as a lot of friends would want to speak to him. Mark reluctantly agrees to help.
Hailey and Jay set him up with wiring as Mark suggests he doesn’t even use a wire and can get his own inform. Jay says after talking to Adam, he is going to use the wire. Hailey learns Mark grew up with Adam and it is only in Chicago that a kid like Adam could turn into a cop, he tries to hit on Hailey and she tells him to get moving. Jay reminds Hailey in the van that the best way to protect everyone is to not interrupt what is going on with Antonio, Adam, and Voight.
Mark walks into the bar and says there are cops sitting up the street and someone should go find out who brought the heat. Mark pushes about a chop shop and finds out the location but breaks the silence when he talks about going to a house party later. Once he leaves them, he returns to the van and Hailey asks if he is talking about Billy Cowan who owns a chop shop.
Kevin and Kim go to see Billy at his shop, who feels he isn’t sure he can help them. He denies running that kind of shop and Kim starts tossing things around as they demand a name. Billy talks about not really knowing his name but has contingencies if stuff like this happens. They have a picture of who it is and Voight tells them to use the photo and find the guy the old fashioned way. Dt. Hank Powell arrives at the IU who is now taking over the officer-involved death, asking Adam to talk to him downstairs.
IRT says there was blood on Rizzo that is unidentified and Adam says he has no idea who left the fresh blood at the scene. Hailey runs into him outside the room and demands Adam to talk to her, but he tells her to stay out of it. She begs him to tell her that he didn’t do what she thinks he did, asking him if he is insane and a thousand ways for this to go wrong. He is risking his life, career and prison time for some half-ass loyalty. Adam says it is about Antonio, Voight and their unit and he will protect it every time as that is who he is. He says she has a problem with his ethics as she shouts that she cares about him; Jay walks in and says he can hear them in the stairwell, ordering them to not have this conversation there.
Mark joins Adam in his car, who says he has never seen the guy in the photo. Adam calls him a liar and demands to know who he is. He tells Mark that he can’t stand by this crew after they killed an 18-yr-old woman. Mark says he thought he was a good guy whom he believes is from Indiana and staying at some hotel close by; Adam releases him.
Hailey and Adam are canvassing the area when another carjacking is in process. They spot the car and Adam goes racing after them, he tells Hailey to put her seatbelt on as they head straight for them, but the SUV swerves and a shoot out takes place. Hailey is able to take one down, shooting him in the leg, Adam and Hailey approach the car where a woman is saved, but badly beaten. Hailey calls for an ambulance.
Voight and Jay talk to Adam, saying the offender shot and killed is John Crawford, someone who is local. Adam learns Mark lied to him and Voight orders him to bring him in. Back at the precinct, Hailey looks at Voight who is in his office and sits at her desk for a moment before she approaches him, saying it went okay with the shooting but tells Voight he cannot let Adam do this, especially after what happened to Lindsey. He reminds her not to get the emotions to get the best of her over the guy she is dating. Hailey doesn’t want to risk her career for a guy she is dating; he has her loyalty and she doesn’t know how to help him, so she is asking Voight to do it. Voight admits he is doing everything he can to help him but at the end of the day, it is Adam’s decision only.
Adam brings Mark into interrogation, confronting him about lying. Voight barges in and gives him John’s phone, revealing the last person who called him was Mark and demands answers. Adam says he is getting charged with a slew of things if he doesn’t talk, but he still refuses. Trudy calls Voight out of the room as Adam tells Mark they have known each other for a long time, but he doesn’t say a word.
IRT meets with Trudy and Voight, who thanks him for doing this. There is no surveillance and no witnesses but the blood on the scene will be a problem. He says he is in the lead of the case, but if they both tell him the truth he will runt he books; Voight promises to talk to Adam as Voight says he appreciates it.
Voight tells Adam that he is going to do this or things are going to go way wrong as it is an election year. He wants Adam to walk it back and pin it on Voight. Adam won’t do it, risking Antonio and Voight’s jobs and without them, the entire unit goes down. Adam wants to know how Voight is going to handle this. Voight says if he doesn’t do this, he can’t guarantee he can help him and there is a price to pay for this kind of loyalty. Voight begs him.
Jay is able to reveal there was a second call on the phone to Mark’s brother, Tommy (Samuel Evan Horowitz). Tommy and John have always run together and when Mark saw the picture he figured his brother was involved and probably called them to warn them. Voight tells everyone to gear up as they go to the apartment building Tommy lives in. Adam screams for Tommy to stop or he will shoot him in the head as Tommy says Adam doesn’t have the balls. Voight orders Tommy to get his hands on his head as he calls Adam a punk. Voight spots the gun Tommy was going for; Adam shocked he would pull a gun on him.
Adam returns to talk to Mark, wondering if Mark even talks to his brother. Mark says it is pretty easy for Adam to forget where he came from, and Mark reveals he wasn’t going to be the one who buried his brother. Officers walk in to arrest Mark, saying he is being charged and there is nothing he can do. Jay finds Hailey, saying she didn’t think it would turn into anything and it caught her off guard. She apologizes to Jay, who says he gets it and they will always be good.
Adam goes to see Trudy at home, talking about Al and Voight on his first day at IU. He says he always trusted Trudy as she says he can believe what Powell is telling him. He wants to know what the truth will do. She says the blood on the scene won’t match Voight and they will dig deeper, given Voight’s reputation; but she also thinks Voight is Voight and he will find a way to survive it to protect all of them. Adam begins to talk about his first day in the district and asked Al why he picked him, and he said he knew Adam was already “his police.”
Voight walks down a hallway to see Antonio in rehab as Adam is questioned by IRT. They read out Adam’s statement who sticks to his original story.
